1 pers.

Looking for a refreshing and unique drink? Café freddo is the perfect recipe for you!  An emblematic beverage of Greek coffee culture, this chilled delight is ideal for hot summer days or anyone seeking an alternative to traditional hot coffee. With its rich espresso base and smooth, frothy top, this drink delivers a bold coffee flavour with a refreshing twist.

The freddo coffee recipe is one of our signature creations. Signature recipes are original drinks imagined by the baristas at MaxiCoffee.

What is Freddo Coffee? The Perfect Summer Iced Coffee!

Freddo Coffee is an iced coffee made from espresso coffee, shaken with ice and topped with a light, creamy froth, obtained using a milk frother.

Unlike other iced coffee drinks, where espresso is simply poured over ice, the Freddo Espresso is expertly blended to maintain the boldness of the coffee while achieving a smooth texture.

The result? A rich, aromatic coffee with a velvety finish, perfect for cooling down while still enjoying an intense espresso kick.

Where does Caffé Freddo come from?

Freddo Coffee is one of Greece’s most iconic iced coffee drinks, particularly popular in Athens and coastal cafés. It originated as a modern twist on traditional Italian espresso, designed to suit Greece’s warm climate and vibrant café culture.

Today, it’s a staple of Greek coffee culture, enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for its intense flavour and refreshing character. You’ll often see people sipping on a Freddo Espresso at outdoor cafés, soaking in the Mediterranean sun.

What is the difference between Freddo espresso and Freddo cappuccino?

Freddo Espresso and Freddo Cappuccino are both refreshing Greek iced coffee drinks and they both start with espresso but differ in texture and ingredients.

Freddo Cappuccino starts with the same Freddo Espresso base we have already explained above, but is topped with a layer of cold, frothed milk. The milk is whipped to achieve a creamy, velvety texture that balances the intensity of the espresso. While the espresso can be sweetened during preparation, the milk remains unsweetened, creating a smooth contrast between the bold coffee and the creamy topping.

Both drinks are amazing for warm weather and are staples of Greek coffee culture. If you prefer a stronger, more intense coffee experience, Freddo Espresso is the way to go. However, if you enjoy a smoother, creamier texture, Freddo Cappuccino is the perfect choice.

Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

  1. Not shaking long enough: The key to a good Freddo is shaking the coffee vigorously for at least one minute to achieve the perfect froth.
  2. Using low-quality coffee: A rich espresso shot makes all the difference. Use freshly ground coffee for the best flavour.
  3. Letting the ice melt too much: Serve immediately after shaking to prevent dilution.
  4. Skipping the frothing step: The foam is what sets Freddo Espresso apart from regular iced coffee – don’t skip it!

Refreshing, tasty and easy to prepare, café freddo will quickly become your favourite drink for sunny days. Most of the ingredients and accessories needed for this original recipe are available to buy on the MaxiCoffee website.
