Owning a Tassimo machine means enjoying a wide range of hot drinks at the touch of a button. Whether you prefer espresso, cappuccino or hot chocolate, your Bosch Tassimo delivers convenience and consistency.
However, like any coffee machine, regular maintenance is essential. If you want your tassimo machine to continue producing great tasting drinks, descaling and proper cleaning must become part of your routine.
Why a filter cartridge can extend the life of your machine
Why Is Descaling a Tassimo Machine Important?
Every Tassimo machine uses water to extract flavour from pods. Over time, minerals in tap water create limescale deposits inside the heating system and internal pipes.
If you do not descale your tassimo machine regularly, you may notice:
Slower brewing time
Reduced drink temperature
Altered taste
Leaks or internal damage
Machine breakdown
Limescale build up can permanently damage internal components. Regular descaling protects performance, extends lifespan and ensures consistent flavour.
How Do I Descale a Bosch Tassimo Coffee Machine?
Descaling a Tassimo machine is straightforward if you follow the correct procedure.

Avoid using white vinegar. Vinegar can damage internal seals and may void your machine warranty.
How Often Should You Descale a Tassimo Machine?
In general, descale your Tassimo machine every 2 to 3 months. However, frequency depends on water hardness in your area. Hard water regions require more frequent descaling.
Most Tassimo models include a calc indicator light that automatically alerts you when descaling is required. This built in system helps maintain your machine without guesswork. If you are unsure about your water hardness, water testing strips are available online.

Should You Use a Filter Cartridge in a Tassimo Machine?
If you use tap water, installing a filter cartridge is highly recommended. A filter cartridge helps:
Reduce limescale formation
Improve water taste
Protect internal pipes
Preserve coffee aroma
Coffee is made up of over 98 percent water. If your water tastes of chlorine or minerals, it directly affects flavour.
By reducing impurities, a filter cartridge ensures better tasting drinks and helps maintain your tassimo machine.
How to Install a Filter Cartridge in a Tassimo Machine
Installing the cartridge is simpe:
Fill the water tank.
Immerse the cartridge cap side down until air bubbles stop.
Insert it into the slot at the bottom of the water tank.
If water struggles to circulate during first use, remove and re immerse the cartridge to release trapped air.
When Should You Replace the Filter Cartridge?
Replace the cartridge every 2 to 3 months.
Because it remains in contact with water, bacteria and mould can develop if left too long.
Some tassimo machine models notify you when replacement is needed. If not, write the installation date on the cartridge to track usage.
Common Problems With a Tassimo Machine and How to Fix Them
Even with regular descaling, your tassimo machine may occasionally show signs of malfunction. Here are the most common issues and how to resolve them.
The Calc Light Stays On
If the calc indicator remains illuminated after descaling:
Ensure you completed the full descaling cycle
Run an additional rinse cycle
Check that the correct T disc was used
If the light persists, repeat the process with fresh descaling tablets.
Water Is Not Flowing Properly
If your tassimo machine struggles to pump water:
Check for trapped air in the filter cartridge
Ensure the water tank is correctly positioned
Inspect for limescale build up
Clean the piercing needle inside the brewing unit
Poor flow is often caused by scale deposits or air bubbles in the system.
Drinks Are Not Hot Enough
If beverages are cooler than usual, this may indicate:
Limescale affecting the heating element
Incomplete descaling
A heavily scaled internal boiler
A full descaling cycle usually resolves temperature issues.
How do I descale a Tassimo without cleaning tablets?
You can use a compatible universal descaler, provided it is suitable for capsule coffee machines.
However:
Avoid vinegar
Avoid citric acid not designed for coffee machines
Always follow dosage instructions
Using incorrect products may damage seals and internal parts of your Tassimo machine.
Maintaining your Tassimo machine is essential if you want consistently great tasting drinks and long term reliability. Regular descaling prevents costly repairs. Using the correct descaling tablets protects internal components. Installing a filter cartridge improves water quality and reduces limescale build up.
