Nespresso Descaling Guide: How to Clean Your Nespresso® Machine Properly
Written by Monica
If you own a Nespresso® capsule coffee machine, proper maintenance is essential to preserve coffee quality and extend your machine’s lifespan. Nespresso descaling and regular cleaning are two key steps to ensure consistently great-tasting espresso and optimal performance.
In this updated guide, we explain how to descale a Nespresso® machine, how often to do it, which products to use, and which common mistakes to avoid.
Why Is Descaling Nespresso® Coffee Machine So Important?
Limescale naturally builds up inside your coffee machine due to minerals found in water. Over time, this can:
Affect coffee taste
Reduce water flow and pressure
Increase brewing time
Damage internal components
Regular Nespresso descaling removes limescale deposits and keeps your machine running efficiently.
Tip: Even if your machine seems to work fine, limescale can accumulate invisibly inside the pipes.
How Often Should You Descale a Nespresso® Machine?
The frequency of Nespresso descaling depends on:
Water hardness in your area
How often you use your machine
As a general rule:
Every 3 months, or
After 300–600 capsules
Some Nespresso® models have a descaling alert light that indicates when it’s time to descale.

How do you descale a Nespresso machine without a descaling kit?
Although using an official product is always recommended, it is still possible to carry out Nespresso descaling without a branded descaling kit. The key is to use a coffee-machine-safe descaling solution specifically designed for capsule machines. These alternatives are widely available and formulated to remove limescale without damaging internal components.
To descale your machine, start by emptying the capsule container and drip tray, then fill the water tank with fresh water mixed with the recommended dose of a compatible descaler. Place a container under the coffee outlet and activate the descaling mode by pressing both cup buttons simultaneously for a few seconds. Run the descaling cycle by pressing the large cup button and allow the full tank to flow through the machine. Once finished, repeat the process if advised by the product instructions.
After descaling, rinse the water tank thoroughly and run at least two full cycles with clean water only. This step is essential to remove any residue and ensure your coffee retains its original flavour. While this method allows effective Nespresso descaling without an official kit, homemade solutions such as vinegar or citric acid should be avoided, as they may damage the machine and alter the taste of your coffee.
Can You Use White Vinegar for Nespresso Descaling?
We strongly advise against using white vinegar for Nespresso descaling, regardless of the machine model.
Vinegar contains acetic acid
This acid can damage internal pipes and seals
It may cause leaks and long-term mechanical issues
Vinegar odour is difficult to eliminate completely
Always use a dedicated Nespresso descaling solution for safe and effective results.
Cleaning a Nespresso® Machine: The Essential Extra Step
Cleaning the Brewing Unit (Percolation Unit)
